Will Steelers Be Able to Add Mychal Kendricks to Roster?
The Pittsburgh Steelers odds of winning the Super Bowl is the fourth best in the NFL next season because they have one of the most talented rosters in the league. Despite having a lot of talent on their team, the Steelers are still trying to add more talent to the team in hopes of winning the Super Bowl next season.
Last week, the Philadelphia Eagles, who won the Super Bowl last year, surprised a lot of teams when they released linebacker Mychal Kendricks.
Soon after the Eagles announced they had released Kendricks, there were a lot of teams rumored to be interested in signing him, including the Steelers, who have a need at the position after failing to find a replacement for the injured Ryan Shazier in free agency and the NFL Draft.
Even though a lot of Steelers fans are optimistic about their team signing Kendricks, they were quickly shot down by other fans who feel the Steelers don’t have the cap space to sign him.
However, those fans don’t know how NFL teams handle their salary cap situation because those were probably the same fans that didn’t think the team had enough salary cap space to sign cornerback Joe Haden last season, which they did.
After spending his entire career in Cleveland, Haden jumped at the opportunity to play for a contender and instead of demanding an outrageous salary, he signed with the Steelers at a reasonable price, with incentives that allowed him to make more money.
In Kendrick’s situation, he is coming off a Super Bowl win, which might actually work against the Steelers because playing for a contender might not be enough to persuade him to take less money. However, playing in the same state he has been throughout his entire career might be an incentive.
With Shazier out for the season, Kendricks will be assured a lot of playing time in Pittsburgh, which is also something the team can use to persuade him to sign with them, which in addition to playing for a historic franchise like Pittsburgh might be enough to get the job done.
Last season, the Steelers finished the regular season tied for the best record in the league, and had hoped to make it to the Super Bowl and win an NFL leading seventh Super Bowl trophy.
Unfortunately, the team was unable to make it to the Super Bowl after losing to the Jacksonville Jaguars in the Divisional round of the playoffs, which was their second home loss to the Jaguars last season.
One of the reasons the Steelers were eliminated early in the playoffs is the fact that they were distracted by their potential matchup with the New England Patriots in the AFC Championship Game, which made them overlook Jacksonville. Another reason was the fact that they didn’t have a good run defense, which was worse without Shazier in the lineup.
If the Steelers have Kendricks in the lineup next season, their run defense should be drastically improved, and he will also give them a veteran linebacker that has a Super Bowl win under his belt to keep the younger players focused on the ultimate prize.
