Steelers Bringing in a Few New Faces Next Season
The Pittsburgh Steelers finished the 2017 season with a 13-3 record, which was tied for the best record in the NFL. However, they failed to take advantage of the fact that they get to play at home in the playoffs and were knocked out by the Jacksonville Jaguars in the divisional round of the playoffs.
Despite the early playoff exit, the Steelers have been one of the busiest teams during the offseason and will have quite a few new faces in the locker room next year. As expected, the roster changes have changed the odds to win the season.
One of the first offseason changes the Steelers made was to upgrade their special teams unit, which they did by signing Nat Berhe.
Berhe, who will play primarily on special teams, is also expected to see some action on defense. The fifth round pick of the New York Giants in 2014 has played in 38 games in his four-year career, starting two games during that span.
However, he was forced to miss the 2015 season because of a calf injury he suffered during offseason workouts.
Berhe, whose tackling style earned him the nickname The Missle, was a great special teams player for the Giants, leading the special teams unit in tackles. He finished the season with 24 tackles, one sack and one forced fumble while playing defense, and also had another 24 tackles and a recovered fumble with the special teams unit.
Berhe, whose father, Berhe Asfaha, moved to the United States in 1970, is the first player of Eritrean descent to play in the NFL.
In addition to Berhe, the Steelers also signed three of their free agents to one-year contracts.
Justin Hunter, who is one of the free agents the team resigned, had initially signed with the Steelers as an unrestricted free agent last offseason. He saw action in seven games last year, starting one of them. He finished the season with four receptions for 23 yards and one touchdown.
Hunter, who was drafted by the Tennessee Titans in 2013, spent his first three seasons with the Titans before3 Joining the Miami Dolphins in 2016, after getting waived by the Titans. The Steelers waived him after one game and he was claimed by the Buffalo Bills, finishing the season with 10 catches for 189 yards and one touchdown.
Daniel McCullers is another one of the free agents the Steelers signed. He was drafted by Pittsburgh in 2014, but has seen limited action ever since. He has played in 42 games since he was drafted and started only two. In four years, McCullers has 28 tackles, 1.5 sacks and one pass defended.
Last year, he played in five games and finished with one tackle.
Stevan Ridley, who was signed late in the season last year, will return for another season with the Steelers.
Ridley was drafted by the New England Patriots in the 2011 NFL draft, and played his first four seasons with the Patriots. In 2012, he had his best statistical season, finishing with 290 carries for 1,263 yards and 12 touchdowns.
Last season, he had 26 carries for 108 yards and one touchdown.
