Last year, the Steelers lost to the Patriots in the AFC Championship Game and figured they would be able to defeat the Patriots this season if they got home field advantage in the playoffs. Due to their success last season, the Steelers Odds to win the Super Bowl was very high this season.
Unfortunately for the Steelers and their fans, they weren’t good enough to beat the Patriots this season, and lost their week 15 meeting with New England, which cost them the top seed in the AFC.
Even though they were the number two seed going into the playoffs, the Steelers were too busy looking ahead to their potential rematch with the Patriots and got smacked around by the Jacksonville Jaguars in the Divisional Round of the playoffs, ending their season prematurely.
Because the Steelers finished the season 13-3, which was tied for the best record in the NFL, people ignored the flaws the team had and looking back at their regular season, it was very obvious they were going to be defeated by the Jaguars, who ended up beating them twice at Heinz field this season.
The Steelers struggled against the run in a lot of games this season, and it ended up costing them three games in the regular season and one in the playoffs.
In their first loss of the season, the Steelers gave up 222 yards on the ground against the Chicago Bears in week 3. The Bears finished the season 5-11.
In their second loss, the Steelers gave up 231 rushing yards to the Jaguars during their week 5 meeting which the Steelers players called a fluke win.
In their third loss of the season, their week 15 loss to New England, the Steelers gave up 77 yards, which is actually a misleading stat. The Patriots aren’t a run first team and only ran the ball 19 times, finishing with a 4.1 yard per carry average and also scored two rushing touchdowns.
The Steelers do deserve some credit for their performance against the Patriots because they held Brady under 300 passing yards.
After their loss to the Jaguars in the Divisional Round, one of the most popular excuses the Steelers and their fans had was the fact that Pro Bowl linebacker Ryan Shazier didn’t play in the game.
Those fans apparently forgot that Shazier played in the week 3 loss to the Bears and the week 5 loss to the Jaguars and they were both able to run the ball with ease, which means it is very doubtful that he would have made a difference if he played.
With the Patriots about to play in the Super Bowl for the eighth time since Bill Belichick became the head coach, the Steelers need to focus on fixing their issues and not worry about the Patriots until they actually have to face them.
The top priority for the team will be to draft a linebacker that can replace Shazier, who is unlikely to play next year even if he fully recovers from his spinal injury.
