After losing to the Jaguars in the first round of the playoffs, what direction will they take?
It appears everyone on the team is facing their own struggles that hinder their ability to work together and achieve greatness.
Possibly the most troubling fact is that the Steelers finished the season with a 13 and 3 record. Understandably, though, they played in the AFC North division -- where the Cleveland Browns managed an abysmal 0 and 16 record. They tied the Patriots, Eagles, and Vikings for the best records in the regular season, only to lose to the Jaguars -- a team with a 10 and 6 record.
Their playoff loss was a spectacle. Jacksonville Jaguars were up 21-0 before Big Ben Roethlisberger pushed their team to make a comeback. The game finished at 45 to 42 in favor of the Jaguars. It's a stark reminder that in the regular season, even though they won most games, it was never easy.
In fact, their regular season performance had many troubling moments:
» They only defeated the Cleveland Browns by three points in Game 1 of the regular season.
» They took a staggering 30 to 9 loss against the Jaguars on Oct 8, 2017.
» They barely defeated the Packers (with Aaron Rodgers not in the game) on Nov 26, 2017.
» They took a 23-17 loss in OT to the Chicago Bears, a team with a 5 and 11 record.
You can blame it on the team not showcasing their top efforts. Some say the team was just slugging through the regular season with the intent of really stepping up in the postseason. If that were the case, their match versus the Jaguars would likely not have started with such a strong sign of an impending blowout.
Here's the harsh reality -- the growing defensive strength the team has claimed to have, it's suddenly showing its true colors. Their offensive players are mostly doing their part, but the team has literally fallen apart on the defensive end. If this weren't true, weaker teams like the Cleveland Browns would not be able to score so aggressively against them.
The efforts set out in 2016 to grow the Steelers did not follow through in the 2017-2018 season. In reality, between ego problems and other off-field issues, the personalities playing together just aren't in alignment. Many will be quick to point fingers at two in particular -- Martavis Bryant and LeVeon Bell.
These two players attempt to be larger than the game they play, Bryant went from not caring if he returned to Pittsburgh next season, to expressing extreme hope that he does. LeVeon Bell intended to take off but now appears to have a long-term contract coming his way. Through all the greed and selfishness, will these players be able to step up and continue their path to improvement that started just two years ago?
It's not 2009 anymore folks. The Pittsburgh Steelers are not on top of the NFL anymore. Even though their record gave them the no.2 seed in the playoffs, and made them a top-4 team... There is a lot missing here, and the beloved black & gold team are going to need to make a serious stride to compete with the best teams in the league next season.
