This, after the Jaguars, overcame the Buffalo Bills in a hard-fought game to earn a spot in the playoffs. Steelers odds will be interesting to follow after the Jaguars defense made light work of their offense the first time they met this season; picking off their quarterback, Ben Roethlisberger five times en route to a comfortable 30-9 win. On the other hand, the Jaguars sleek offense was highlighted by their running back Leonard Fournette who rushed for 178yrds. As we await the big game, here is what we know about the two teams.
The Steelers will be hoping that the injury to Jaguars Wide Receiver (ankle) will help their plan to win, besides the fact that they are looking to make amends to their embarrassing loss to the Jaguars. Generally, Steelers odds look good with the return of their star receiver Antonio Brown, who is the only player to be voted a unanimous first-team all-pro. His services will gladly be welcomed back after he suffered a torn calf in week 15, an injury that sidelined ever since. Arguably the toughest cover in the league when playing healthy, the Jaguars corner tandem of A.J. Bouye and Jalen Ramsey will have a hard time trying to contain him if he plays.
Blake Bortles
The Jaguars quarterback has shown signs of inconsistency in the lead up to this matchup (which raises Steelers odds) despite being just the second passer in the last 25 seasons to have more rushing yards than passing yards in a playoff game. It might have worked against Bills, but against the Steelers stronger defense and an offense that is eight in scoring in the league, this might prove an uphill task for Bortles. Despite all this, he has come out to state that his focus is not on the doubters, rather on the Steelers. Noting that criticism is something he has dealt with before.
Ben Rothlisberger
The Steelers quarterback had an out-of-form performance in their first encounter loss this season that he will want to forget sooner than later. He finished the game without a single touchdown and had five interceptions; this is only the second time he has recorded such a stat line in his career. At 35 years old, many were beginning to wonder if age was finally catching up with his athletic abilities. However, he erased all doubt with a 22:7 touchdown-to-interception ratio since the Jacksonville loss, after resting off the season finale. Since the eleventh week, he has scored sixteen touchdowns, given the ball away just four times and averaged an impressive 325.5 yards a game.
All factors considered, the odds look to be stacked up against the Jacksonville Jaguars. With a star receiver returning to their opponents offense, a quarterback who hasn’t been in his best form of late and a motivated rival with a mission to revenge a loss in front of their home fans, it seems like a long call for them. It all remains to be seen, however, come Sunday the 14th when rubber meets the road.
