Even though they already have a good chance to win the Super Bowl, the Steelers are even more motivated to win it this year for teammate Ryan Shazier.
The Pro Bowl linebacker has been sidelined since he suffered a spinal injury in a game against the Cincinnati Bengals in week 13. Since the injury, Shazier, who had surgery on his spine, has been confined to a hospital where he has been rehabbing.
Since the injury, there hasn’t been many updates from the team, who were respecting his wishes. But he did show up at the team’s practice on Wednesday in a wheelchair. But there were reports last week that the linebacker has regained feeling in his legs.
Teammate Mike Mitchell, who mentored Shazier after he was drafted in 2014, visited Shazier at the hospital on a weekly basis. Mitchell said he has been praying every day that Shazier quickly recovers from the injury and is able to be on the sidelines to help the Steelers celebrate winning the Super Bowl.
Mitchell added that he expects a lot of people to cry if that happens.
Shazier, who was voted into the Pro Bowl for the second time in his career this season, was instrumental in helping the Steelers turn their defense around.
Cam Heyward, the team’s defensive captain, said when the Steelers drafted Shazier, who like Heyward is an Ohio State Buckeye, he felt the team was starting over with a new nucleus on defense.
After an adjustment period, the defense started to improve.
In 2015, Shazier’s second in the NFL, the defense finished in the top 10 in points allowed. Shazier also came up big for the team in the playoffs, recording two fumbles that helped the Steelers defeat the Bengals in the playoffs, giving them their first postseason win since 2010.
In 2016, the defense was even better, and Shazier led the team in interceptions as their defense held their first two playoff opponents to 12 and 16 points respectively.
The Steelers defense continued to improve and was even better this year as Shazier led the team in four different categories, despite missing the last four games of the season.
The Steelers finished in the top 5 in scoring defense, sacks, pass defense, and total defense. After losing Shazier, the defense rallied together and continued playing at a high level.
Shazier is expected to be watching his teammates as they take on the Jacksonville Jaguars in the Divisional Round of the playoffs.
The Jaguars defeated the Steelers 30-9 in their week 5 meeting. In that game, they forced Ben Roethlisberger into throwing five interceptions in what was his worst game as a professional. As expected, the Jaguars have been gloating about the win and feel they can do it again.
However, the Steelers have been waiting for another opportunity to get their hands on the Jaguars since week 5, and will be more than ready for anything the Jaguars try to do on Sunday.
