Steelers Odds to Win Super Bowl Drop after other Contenders Upgrade
The Pittsburgh Steelers finished last season with a 13-3 record, which tied the best record in the NFL. Despite having home field advantage, they couldn’t get past the Jacksonville Jaguars in the divisional round of the playoffs, ending their season in disappointment.
After the Philadelphia Eagles defeated the New England Patriots in the Super Bowl, the Steelers had the fourth best odds of winning the Super Bowl next season according to MyBookie, but after free agency started and teams like Minnesota and Los Angeles made some big moves, the Steelers odds today have them as the fourth favorite to win the Super Bowl.
The Patriots are still the favorites to win the Super Bowl next season because they still have Bill Belichick and Tom Brady. The fact that they have played in the last seven AFC title games makes them the team most likely to represent the AFC again next season
The Eagles also improved in the offseason, adding players like Michael Bennett and Haloti Ngata to a defense that was already very good. The fact that they will have Carson Wentz back as well is one of the reasons they have the second best odds to win the Super Bowl. The Minnesota Vikings, who lost to the Eagles in the NFC Championship game moved up to the third spot after signing Kirk Cousins, who is considered an upgrade over Case Keenum and Sam Bradford, who left in free agency.
With players like Ben Roethlisberger, Antonio Brown, LeVeon Bell and JuJu Smith-Schuster, the Steelers will have one of the best offenses in the league again next season, but their defense still has a lot of holes to fill.
Another reason the Steelers odds dropped is the fact that they have under achieved in the last few seasons, due to distractions that are mainly their fault. Before their playoff game against the Jaguars, LeVeon Bell was more focused on getting a contract extension than the upcoming game against the Jaguars. Smith-Schuster spent the bye week before the game doing man on the street interviews in disguise and seemed more focused on building his brand than helping the team win.
Antonio Brown, who suffered a calf injury that forced him to miss the final two games of the season, seemed like the only player other than Roethlisberger that was focused on the Jaguars, doing everything he could to get back on the field for the game.
After last season’s embarrassing loss to Jacksonville, the Steelers should be motivated to get back in the Super Bowl, especially since Roethlisberger has been pondering retirement for the past two seasons. If the team is focused, they will be one of the most dangerous teams in the NFL next season. If they aren’t, they will be knocked out of the playoffs once again.
The Steelers will also face tougher competition in the AFC North next season with the Cincinnati Bengals expected to bounce back from their disappointing 2017 campaign, the Baltimore Ravens barely missed the playoffs, and are also expected to be better next season.
Even the Cleveland Browns, who have just one win in the last two seasons, have made a few big moves and are expected to be better next season, which means the window for the Steelers to win their seventh Super Bowl is closing quickly.
